From Bioprocessing to Big Tech: How One Candidate Landed a Google Interview with a Strategic Resume & Interview Prep

If you’re aiming for a role in tech, a strategic resume isn’t optional, it’s essential. One candidate came to us with a strong background in bioprocessing, robotics, and data center operations, but his resume didn’t reflect the full scope of his expertise. He needed a strategic resume for tech roles that would help him stand out to recruiters at top companies like Google.

Here’s how we restructured his resume, refined his messaging, and prepared him for an interview with one of the world’s most competitive tech employers.

The Challenge: Outdated Resume, Misaligned Messaging

The client had a resume full of real substance, boasting years of experience in automation environments, robotic systems, troubleshooting infrastructure, and analyzing data from high-volume laboratory settings.

But the document was:

  • Visually outdated.
  • Lacking structure and keywords.
  • Missing context around achievements.
  • Not tailored to the data center or automation operations roles he was targeting.

He also had aspirations of landing interviews at leading companies, but felt his resume would never make it past the first scan.

The Goal: Build a Resume That Opens Doors, Fast

The client wanted a document that would:

  • Show the full scope of his technical skills.
  • Highlight data center-related experience.
  • Be ATS-compatible and recruiter-friendly.
  • Support pivoting into roles at major companies like Google.

He also needed a cover letter and, later, help preparing for an upcoming interview.

The Process: Strategic, Customized, and Collaborative

Step 1: Discovery & Deep-Dive

We kicked things off with a few key questions:

  • What are your top 2–3 career contributions?
  • What technical tools, platforms, and systems have you worked with?
  • What roles are you targeting?

He shared some impressive stories:

  • Leading a bioreactor R&D team with zero errors.
  • Automating lab workflows using robotics and scripting tools.
  • Troubleshooting infrastructure in automation systems.
  • Programming SCADA systems, PLCs, and working with cloud storage and virtualization.

He also highlighted his education, including courses in neuroscience, R programming, and virtual collaboration, adding depth to his already diverse profile.

Step 2: Resume Transformation

We completely rebuilt the resume from the ground up, focusing on:

  • Modern formatting with clean, ATS-friendly design.
  • Quantifiable achievements, such as improving throughput by 33%.
  • Emphasizing key systems like SCADA, Cellario, VWorks, TwinCAT, Oracle, and R.
  • Clear separation of sections: Summary, Core Competencies, Technical Skills, Experience, and Education.

We also made strategic language choices, avoiding the overuse of percentages as per the client’s request, and incorporating terms such as IT infrastructure, lab automation, programmable logic controllers, and virtual environments to align with his job targets.

Step 3: Tailored Cover Letter

Once the resume was approved, we moved on to the cover letter. It focused on:

  • His ability to bridge engineering, lab science, and IT infrastructure.
  • His comfort with complex systems and high-volume environments.
  • A forward-looking statement about contributing to innovation-focused teams.

Step 4: Interview Prep, For Google

A few weeks later, the client returned with great news; he’d landed a phone screening interview with Google.

To help him prepare, I created a custom interview prep guide:

  • Sample responses to classic questions like “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”, and “Why do you want this job?”
  • Talking points customized to reflect his experience, leadership style, and technical fluency.
  • Emphasis on storytelling frameworks to turn his experience into engaging, concise narratives.

The Result: Resume Approved, Cover Letter Sent, Google Interview Secured

“Resume looks great! Cover letter looks great. Thank you!”

“I landed a phone screening interview with Google… the prep sheet will help a lot for the interview this upcoming week.”

The client walked away with not just a set of polished career materials, but with confidence in how to position his experience and speak about his value in a high-stakes interview.

What You Can Learn from This Story

1. Don’t downplay hybrid technical experience.

Whether you’re in robotics, labs, IT, or field support, your experience is valuable, if you know how to position it.

2. A resume isn’t just a list, it’s a narrative.

When your resume tells a cohesive, tailored story, it resonates with both ATS systems and human readers.

3. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Getting feedback, asking the right questions, and working with a professional can save you time and help you move forward faster.

4. Preparation pays off.

It’s one thing to get the interview. It’s another to be READY for it. A personalized prep guide can help you feel more confident and clear-headed on the call.
