The big, scary ATS? Not a chance! An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software application that streamlines the hiring and recruiting process for employers by parsing resume content into various categories and then scanning it for specific keywords to decide if the application should be passed along to employers/recruiters for review.
Now, you may ask yourself, “how do I pass the systems?” Compliance and targeting, of course!
First, you’ll need to use a clean, balanced format that is compliant with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). You can find some samples here: https://protouchcareers.com/services. You want the formatting to be simple and easy to scan.
Another important note with formatting is that ATS has trouble scanning what many people consider “modern,” which significantly decreases the chances of your resume being reviewed by an actual person. Tables, graphics, text boxes, and columns often cause critical errors within ATS, thus decreasing your chances of landing interviews. Although “modern” resumes may look pretty on paper, they are NOT the key to success.
It is also imperative that your resume includes keywords that match the targeted job description and highlight relevant work experience and professional skills. To gather a list of relevant keywords and phrases to boost your success against ATS and catch employers’ eyes, research 2-3 target job postings. Thoroughly review the job description. What are the requirements of the job? What types of skills are they looking for in the role? What phrases and words are repeated multiple times? Include those!
